Nokia has finally released a software update for the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet that lets you use Skype. For some reason, Nokia didn't include this functionality into the N800 until now, even though Skype was on the list of features when they first announced it at CES 2007 in January.
Beside the Skype, Nokia's Nseries widescreen device comes equipped with a pretty nice set of features: 800x480 pixel display, QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a built-in webcam.

Believe it or not, it's finally here, and it's even better than we expected. The quad-band GSM/EDGE/Wi-Fi iPhone (yes, Apple held onto the name) defies expections by essentially turning the long-rumored touch-screen iPod into a phone, making for an all-purpose music, video, photo and Web browsing machine that's even thinner than the latest slim smartphones.

Toting 8GB of flash memory (a 4GB version will also be available), the iPhone (which measures 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.46 inches -- nice) has a 3.5-inch "multi-touch" display that lets you control all the phone's functions with your fingers, ranging from dialing your contacts to scrolling though album covers and calling up a full QWERTY keypad (complete with text prediction for SMS messages).

All the calling features we crave are present and accounted for, including a speakerphone, conference calling, a contact book (which syncs with the Mac-based Address Book) and a new feature dubbed "Visual Voicemail," which lets you browse a list of voice messages and select the one you want to hear first.

The new iPhone also doubles as your iPod, syncing with your iTunes library and storing all your tunes and playlists. Turn the phone sideways and you can watch your favorite TV shows or movies from the iTunes Music Store -- pretty cool, although with just 8GB of flash memory on board, you won't quite be able to store all three seasons of "Lost." Also disappointing is the lack of over-the-air music or video downloads, which we guessed the moment we saw that the iPhone was EDGE-only (we'd been hoping for HSDPA data access).

E-mail on the iPhone is a given, with access for POP and IMAP accounts (along with push e-mail through Yahoo), and the device also boasts a mobile version of Apple's Safari Web browser; again, the first images show impressive full-page rendering of such difficult sites as the New York Times home page. You also get Apple's Widget apps (news and info apps, calculators, etc.), a 2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

It generously combines a phone, PDA, music player, word processor, web browser, still and video cameras into one chunky unit. You can also load many more third party applications onto it, such as Opera Mini, universal remote control software or, erm, Soduko.The Zinc runs Windows Mobile, and as such gives you a lot of system information and customisation options at any moment.

The Zinc reacts more like a PDA than a phone, down to the point where you’ll have to remove the stylus, tap the start icon and then tap the phone menu before you can dial a number. Luckily, contacts are available through a soft key on the home screen.

There are a lot of input methods available to you. You can choose between a Palm-esque gesture recognition system, a miniature QWERTY keyboard which you tap with the stylus, or a thumb-operated keyboard which slides out to the side of the phone. This flips the display orientation from portrait to landscape to compensate, although it takes roughly one second to redraw the screen -- depending on how many programs you have open. It’s easy to use, and once you get used to transposing keys to access numbers and symbols a lot faster than predictive text, although we found using it for anything longer than two minute bursts started to hurt our hands.The battery life is surprisingly good for a machine that sports a 2.8 inch, 240 x 320 pixel touch sensitive display. Depending on our Bluetooth, GPRS and Wi-Fi usage, we averaged between three and five days on a single charge. The phone supports 3G networks, if you’re not on a 3G network, you can still get online through Wi-Fi, although browsing with multiple windows open chewed through the battery life extremely quickly.

A lot of features, settings and options have been crammed into the phone -- such as a robust calendar and outlook synchronisation -- but you really need to use the stylus to get to the tiny, thumb deterring icons that litter the home screen. Even the phone’s keypad is hidden away under sub menus. And why exactly memory status has to be displayed on the home screen we’ll never know. It’s all too convoluted; if a friend asks to borrow the Zinc to make a quick call, they won’t be able to use it unassisted.At 170g, and 110 x 59 x 21 mm, it’s not the most pocket friendly phone on the market, but it is very versatile, especially when paired with a Mini-SD card. However the phone still has too many drawbacks (most of which are usability related) and next to offerings from Palm or Dopod -- which has a similar, yet NextG compatible model available -- it’s hard to recommend.

Here is the story of a love-hate relationship. The Nokia 7380 is a phone I would have loved to love, but had to hate-love. Beautiful, no bigger than a Milky Way(tm) chocalate bar, and so relatively well balanced with a decent camera, a radio player and even Bluetooth. I'm not a refined lady -- the target market for that lipstick-shaped phone sold in Holt Renfrew luxury stores in Canada -- but people were still turning heads on me. However, using the Nokia 7380 requires skills since there is no keypad, just a spinner wheel to select numbers, a concept introduced last year in the Nokia 7280, painstaking and made necessary for style's sake. Yet, this time I kept the 7380 for more than a month and I almost grew used to it. But why didn't they include number voice dialing, a technology that has been around since 2004 and that allows, not only to dictate names but numbers.
Other than that, the Nokia 7380 is great: A crocodile skin leather back cover; The front is a full mirror that reveals the display only when you use it. The VGA camera is good and sound quality is surprisingly good enough for such a small design, both in handset and speakerphone mode. Text entry is a challenge without a keypad but the method they developped at least brings up the most likely letters first to make things faster -- but it occasionally fails. Yet, the Nokia 7380 is for people who need to be stylish at all expense. Others should choose ugly and functional regular phones.
